Daily use of sunscreen is a priority.

Even in the spring, the sun’s rays can be harmful. In fact, ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight is the greatest in North America during the late spring and early summer, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Additionally all skin has been covered up by clothing or materials which have shielded it from the skin. Therefore, you skin is even more susceptible to sun damage during the warmer and sunnier months.

Remember most moisturizers with sunscreen aren’t water-resistant, so you can’t rely on them to protect your face or body if you swim or sweat. Some aren’t broad spectrum sunscreens either, so they don’t shield you from ultraviolet A rays, the kind that can cause aging and skin damage. The bottom line is that everyone, even those with darker skin, should use sunscreen when they’re out in the sun for any length of time.

  • When you go out, dress appropriately. Sunscreen is just one part of a smart sun protection program. Cover up with a long-sleeved shirt or light jacket to protect your arms and a hat to protect your face and neck.
  • Remember sunscreen on cool and overcast days. Clouds expose a lot of UV rays; up to 80 percent of them reach the earth.
  • Be Prepared. Apply sunscreen to exposed areas—face, ears, back of the neck, and hands—15 to 30 minutes before you go out to give it time to start working. And reapply sunscreen every two hours, if you’ll be outside that long.

Don’t forget to moisturize: Hydration.

During the spring and summer, you need hydration. Higher temperatures result in oilier skin for everyone. Since there’s humidity in the air, a heavy moisturizer isn’t necessary. Therefore, use a lighter moisturizer during spring and summer months.

Lotion Up: While your skin does get a dose of hydration from the warmer climate, sweat and sun exposure actually dehydrate the skin, so lotion is still necessary.

Toss and purge old cosmetics and skin care products. These products have a shelf life. Old, outdated products can harbor bacteria and lose their effectiveness.

Check the dates on your products. You may want to toss the following:

  • Anything past the expiration date
  • Products that appear dry or crusty
  • Anything that has changed consistency, color, or smell
  • Anything with an SPF older than one year (SPF loses its effectiveness over time and it’s just not worth the risk.)
  • Mascara older than three months. (Always toss it after three months, regardless of how much there is remaining.)
  • Old, dirty makeup brushes and sponges

Toxic Fragrances Cause Contact Dermatitis

FRAGRANCE CAUSES –  SKIN BURNS OR BROWN AGE SPOTS

Have you ever noticed that some ladies have distinct brown discoloration on areas such as the neck, décolletage and even on and behind their ears! This condition is a direct result of daily application of perfume to these areas.

Some perfumes even contain bergamot, a fragrant fruit that is photosensitive, meaning that it can cause aging spots or brown spots on your skin when it combines with the sun on your skin. The solution: spray perfume on your clothes instead of directly on your skin. Age spots are flat, brown, gray, or black spots on the skin.

Your favorite perfume or cologne is likely to contain alcohol, which when applied to your exposed skin during daylight hours, causes it to become photosensitive to sunlight. This means your skin is more likely to suffer from sunburn, leading to wrinkles, pigmentation and possibly even skin cancer.

So basically, applying perfume directly to the skin will accelerate burning; which in turn, sunburn causes wrinkles and pigmentation.

Contact dermatitis is a fairly common effect of perfume on the skin. This can cause your skin to develop a red, itchy rash that can be quite painful and even blister and become infected, depending on the severity of your reaction to the product. Those who use certain products regularly increase their risk of a severe reaction and even chronic skin disorders, such as eczema.

 

Safe Skin Perfume Tips:

  • – Spray your perfume onto your wrists. (Just don’t rub them together – this bruises the notes, altering the scent.)
  • – Squirt your delicious smelling smell onto the skin under your clothes. (Avoid spraying it onto your actual clothes – fragrance can stain fabrics!)
  • – Heat helps emit the perfume from your body, so any body parts like your inner elbows and knees are also wonderful places to spray.
  • – Oh, and spritzing your fragrance on your hair does leave a lovely lingering scent, but the alcohol can also dry out your strands so be careful when doing this. (Try spritzing your hair brush instead.)

You should also talk to your partner ahead of time about what you will and will not do sexually. Your partner should always respect your right to say no to anything that doesn’t feel right.
  • Make sure you get the health care you need. Ask a doctor or nurse about STD testing and about vaccines against HPV and hepatitis B.
  • Girls and young women may have extra needs to protect their reproductive health. Talk to your doctor or nurse about regular cervical cancer screening and chlamydia testing. You may also want to discuss unintended pregnancy and birth control.
  • Avoid using alcohol and drugs. If you use alcohol and drugs, you are more likely to take risks, like not using a condom or having sex with someone you normally wouldn’t have sex with.

Differences Between Anal Warts, Hemorrhoids & Anal Fissures

One of the most typical health conditions confused with hemorrhoids is anal warts. They are sorta the same… yet they stem from entirely different causes and therefore are treated in very different methods. Anal warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). This virus is highly contagious and often transmitted through sexual intercourse or skin-to-skin contact. An anal fissure is a small tear in the thin, moist tissue (mucosa) that lines the anus.

The major distinction of course is the occurrence of pain.

What are Anal Warts?

Anal warts (also called “condyloma acuminata”) are a condition that affects the area around and inside the anus. They may also affect the skin of the genital area. They first appear as tiny spots or growths, perhaps as small as the head of a pin, and may grow quite large and cover the entire anal area. They usually appear as a flesh or brownish color. Usually, they do not cause pain or discomfort and patients may be unaware that the warts are present. Some patients will experience symptoms such as itching, bleeding, mucus discharge and/or a feeling of a lump or mass in the anal area. Anal warts are caused by HPV and can be transmitted by direct contact ie. basically any contact exposure to the anal area (hand contact, secretions from a sexual partner) can result in HPV infection .

HPV infection does not lead to hemorrhoids.

What are Anal Fissures?

An anal fissure is a small tear or crack in the lining of the anus. It may occur when passing large or hard stools, straining during childbirth, or experiencing bouts of diarrhea. An anal fissure is usually a minor condition that goes away within six weeks. Home treatments can help ease pain and promote healing.

Causes of Anal Fissure

Anal fissure can occur as a result of any circumstance that puts excessive pressure on the lining of the anus. Thus there are a variety of causes, which may include:

  • Constipation with large or impacted stools
  • Chronic or persistent diarrhea
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (e.g. Crohn’s disease)
  • Childbirth
  • Infections such as syphilis, herpes, HIV or tuberculosis
  • Cancer

What are Hemorrhoids?

On the other hand, are a very painful condition. Symptoms of hemorrhoids are anal itching, pain (especially while sitting), blood on stool, and lumps near the anus. Increased pressure in the veins of the anus causes hemorrhoids. This is why hemorrhoids are common during pregnancy and after childbirth.

Hemorrhoid symptoms may include finding bright red blood on your toilet paper or seeing blood in the toilet after a bowel movement. Other common symptoms include rectal pain, pressure, burning, and itching. You may also be able to feel a lump in your anal area.

Hemorrhoids are common and usually not too serious. They can often be treated with home remedies, and you may not even need to be seen by a doctor.

But some symptoms of hemorrhoids, especially rectal bleeding, may also be caused by other diseases, some of them serious, like colon cancer.

Treatment of Anal Conditions:

 

Anal Warts Screenings, Tests & Checks:

Anal warts and hemorrhoids can both seem like lumps or masses of tissue round the anal area. However, there are difference scan result in a proper identification upon near inspection of the area.

Hemorrhoids Treatment & Care:

Hemorrhoids are usually best treated in your own home through a high-fiber diet, a proper amount of exercise, and easily obtained over-the-counter relief. Home remedies often work nicely on hemorrhoids and surgery is just rarely needed.

Hemorrhoids are often kept away by keeping the lifestyle changes that were made to assist cure them.

You should seek treatment for hemorrhoid symptoms if:

  • You have rectal bleeding for the first time.
  • You have heavy rectal bleeding.
  • You have rectal bleeding that is not responding to home care.

Anal warts will frequently come back for no cause under your control, because the virus can reside dormant in your skin cells for a long period. Post-treatment care and doctor’s supervision are often stressed to minimize chances of future outbreaks. When warts come back, they can usually be treated at your surgeon’s office. If a large number of new warts develop quickly, surgery may be needed again.

Treatment options for anal warts include:

  • Topical medication: These creams usually work best if the warts are very small and located only on the skin around the anus.
  • Topical medications that will freeze the warts (liquid nitrogen)
  • Topical medications that will burn the warts (Trichlorocetic acid, podophyllin)
  • Surgery: When the warts are either too large for the above mentioned treatments or are internal, surgery is considered. During surgery, the warts are surgically removed. The patient will be anesthetized for the procedure. The type of anesthetic depends on the number and exact location of the warts being removed. When there are many warts, your surgeon may perform the surgery in stages.
  • An internal examination will also be performed so that any lesions on the inside can also be found and treated.

What Are Acrylics and Artificial Nails.

  1. First, cosmetics and nail products do not have to undergo clinical trials before being sold on the market.
  2. Second – nail salons are not required to list ingredients on labels unless the product is available for purchase.

The Food and Drug Administration regulates nail products for both home and salon and considers nail salon services safe as long as they are administered carefully by trained and licensed nail technicians. The agency has stated that while many nail products “contain potentially harmful ingredients,” they are allowed on the market “because they are safe when used as directed.” But it’s really up to you to make sure that they are.

Why the Deadly Causes?

 

Let’s just start with the basics, for many years, polish usually included substances known to be toxic:

  • UV Light (directly linked to skin cancer)
  • Acetone – Nail salons typically remove nail polish and artificial nails by soaking nails with acetone, ethyl acetate (a sweetish smelling “non-acetone”), or acetonitrile. No removers are considered safe for use.
  • Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), which adds flexibility to polish, is a toxin linked to feminizing effects in baby boys through breast milk, decreased sperm count, and other developmental and reproductive problems.
  • Toluene, which helps stabilize nail polish color and creates a smooth finish, has toxic effects on the brain and spinal cord, and as a result it can cause headaches, dizziness, and fatigue.
  • Formaldehyde, which serves as a nail hardener, is known to be a cancer-causing substance as well as a skin irritant.

Literally all the chemicals used to apply artificial or acrylic nails are notoriously unhealthy and include offenders as resins and formaldehyde, which have been shown to cause cancer. Then add to the continuous use of these materials which can lead to serious nail breaks, infection and loss of the natural nail. The cost of unnatural beauty can be more damaging than you currently realize.

Since consumer advocacy campaigns targeted these “toxic three” in 2006, many major companies have excluded these chemicals from their products. OPI, Essie, Nail Tek, Orly, Sally Hansen, and Milani — among others — now advertise that their nail polishes are DBP-, toluene-, and formaldehyde-free. Some newer brands, including Priti and Karma, have never contained these ingredients.

MMA’s (Methyl Methacrylate) have been banned by the FDA for use on nails because of toxicity, some lower-end nail salons still use the toxic substance to cut back on costs.

But older products may still be on the market, particularly at discount stores. So be sure to only purchase polish that is specifically labeled as free of the toxic three.

Older products may still be in use at salons, too. Always ask your nail technician to use only products that are DBP-, toluene-, and formaldehyde-free. Better yet, bring your own nail polish: When the California Department of Toxic Substances Control tested a random sampling of 25 polishes from nail salons in 2011, they found that five of seven products claiming to be free of these three chemicals included at least one in significant levels. Most of the mislabeled products were brands available only at salons, not in retail stores

Are There Healthier or Safer Alternatives?

“The short answer is NO. Really there are no healthy alternatives to adding a false “coat of armor” to your nails. But creating a strong healthy natural nail base by using products free of formaldehyde or chemicals is the key.” stressed Dr. Lawrence Jaeger, a NYC Dermatologist at Advanced Dermatology Associates who specializes in nail disorders.

Regarding Artificial Nail Application

Artificial nail application is a popular service provided by nail salons, whether to strengthen nails or add length. Besides acrylics, there are now some newer alternatives.

  • Acrylic nails: Made with a liquid acrylic compound called ethyl methacrylate (EMA), acrylics are considered safe if applied carefully to avoid skin contact. Redness and swelling can occur if the product comes in contact with the skin around the nails.EMA replaced methyl methacrylate (MMA) in acrylic nails after MMA was removed from the market in 1974. MMA was taken off-market due to risks including serious allergic reactions, nail infections, permanent nail deformities, and respiratory problems. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises that salons should not use products with MMA. Even so, some MMA is still in use because no regulation specifically prohibits its use in cosmetic products.If you can, ask your nail technician whether the salon still uses MMA. More importantly, be alert to tell-tale signs. MMA gives off an unusually powerful and noxious odor. Also, be suspicious of very low-priced full-sets and fills, since MMA is significantly cheaper than EMA.
  • Gel nails, made with a gel resin and pigment, are less durable than acrylics, but they may be preferable because they don’t contain solvents. They also stay shiny and unchipped for significantly longer than a basic manicure.A nail technician paints layers of a thin, gel-like coating onto nails to create a flexible nail covering. Nails feel dry and smooth once hardened under a UV lamp. Like mini tanning beds, UV lamps emit rays that can harm the skin. Up to 10 minutes of exposure is required when gel nails are first applied and again whenever gaps are filled as the nails grow out. This repeat exposure over time can have a negative, unhealthy aging effect on the skin. UV lamps are associated with a higher risk of skin cancer and earlier signs of aging.Removing both gel nails, as well as acrylics, requires a soak in acetone after first filing off the top layer (to make acetone soak in faster).
  • Shellac nails, yet another option now available at many nail salons, are similar to gel nails but require a shorter-term commitment. This gel-polish hybrid is applied like polish and cured under a UV light like gels. It lasts up to 2 weeks and is easier to remove than acrylics or gels — requiring a soak in acetone but no filing.While the chemical risk from shellac, as well as gel, formulations may be quite low, the harms posed by repeated UV exposure should not be underestimated.
  • Minx nails offer a way to avoid many of the undesirable side effects of nail application. Available at many nail salons today, Minx are like stickers for the nails. After you select from an array of patterns or colors, a nail technician heats the flexible adhesive polymer and then presses it onto your dry nails, trimming each one to fit. There is no drying time, and the product is odorless. Minx nails last 1 to 2 weeks. They can be removed by heating the nails with a hair dryer and then peeling them off. Be aware that there isn’t any product safety information available for Minx nails, so no one really knows if any chemicals are released when the polymer is heated.

The takeaway here is a bittersweet and costly truth, which is seriously damaging to your health. There are healthier choices, but no shortcuts. Stop and think about how costly and medically damaging your nail beauty (vanity) is causing. If you suspect a nail infection, consult a dermatologist for an evaluation.

RECAP of the FIVE POTENTIAL DANGERS: 

  1. The hard-to-clean area underneath your nail may cause your nails to be extra sensitive, especially if an MMA-based acrylic (Methyl Methacrylate) is used. Though they’ve been banned for use on nails because of toxicity, some low-end nail salons still it.

Halloween is this week and the costumes are already in place to be adorned by children and adults. Halloween face-paint is all the rave. It’s the art of creation that makes any relationship with a makeup artist, a very prized one. But just how safe is the paint you’re about to smear all over your little one’s and your own face?

HALLOWEEN FACE PAINT – TRICK, TREAT OR TOXIC.

If you’re using face paint to add to your look this Halloween, it’s important to make sure you’re choosing the right products to avoid any harmful effects or skin reactions.

According to a report in 2009 by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC), a national coalition of nonprofit groups working to eliminate harmful chemicals from personal care products.

After testing ten major kids face paints sold in the US, the study found that all ten of the face paints tested contained lead.

Six out of the ten face paints tested contained the known skin allergens, nickel, cobalt and/or chromium, at levels far exceeding the recommendations of industry studies.

Yes, the amounts were low – but, as Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC) points out, there’s no safe level of lead exposure, which is why the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends protecting children from it.

Unfortunately things haven’t changed since then in the industry, as a recent report by (CSC)“Pretty Scary 2: Unmasking Toxic Chemicals in Kids’ Makeup was spearheaded by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and released by the Breast Cancer Fund and the California Public Interest Research Group. The report comes courtesy of the Breast Cancer Fund (BCF), which sent 48 different Halloween face paints to an independent lab to have them tested for the presence of heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead, and mercury. Nearly half the paints had trace amounts of at least one heavy metal, and some contained up to four different ones. Paints with dark pigments were more likely to contain heavy metals — and at high concentrations.

The report says that of the 48 Halloween face paints tested, 21 had trace amounts of at least one heavy metal and some had as many as four. Lead was found in nearly 20 percent of the paints and cadmium in nearly 30 percent.

Lead is linked to learning disabilities and developmental problems in children and cadmium is linked to breast, kidney, lung and prostate cancers, according to the report.

No Regulation On Makeup. 

So, how and why are these harmful products permitted in face paint, even though lead has been banned in regulated products like house paint for decades?

Unfortunately make-up is not regulated. The law does not require cosmetic products and ingredients, other than color additives, to have FDA approval before they go on the market.

Therefore the consequences of lead exposure are serious and rampant. The California Department of Public Health Lead Poisoning Prevention Branch website states that lead poisoning can harm a child’s nervous system and brain when they are still forming.

  • Lead can lead to a low blood count (anemia).
  • Small amounts of lead in the body can make it hard for children to learn, pay attention, and succeed in school.
  • Higher amounts of lead exposure can damage the nervous system, kidneys, and other major organs. Very high exposure can lead to seizures or death.

The Safest Options.

Since all of the v contained lead, and none of the metals they found were listed on the ingredient labels, the CSC actually recommends avoiding Halloween face paint altogether until safety standards are put in place. CSC urges parents that, if they do choose to use face paint, they keep it away from kids’ mouths and hands so they don’t ingest it.

  • Go Natural: Homemade is the way. Make your own dyes and colors. The CSC has provided some DIY recipes using food or natural food coloring on their website.
  • “Say No” To Paint Kits: Don’t use paint kits. Professional face paint is actually cosmetic makeup that is made with ingredients that are safe for use on the skin. Halloween face paint kits often contain dyes or color additives that are not FDA-compliant. Never use craft paint, acrylic paint, markers or pens on the skin, which can cause an allergic reaction and can be very difficult to remove. Use cosmetic makeup products will come off easily using only soap and water.
  • Do a Patch Test (Skin Allergy): Patch testing may help to find the cause of allergic contact dermatitis.Whenever you use a new makeup product on yourself or your child, you should always do a patch test to check for sensitivity. “Non-toxic” doesn’t mean it won’t cause a skin reaction. Take a small amount of the product and apply it on the inside of your elbow. Watch for any kind of immediate reaction after about 20 minutes or so.
  • Wash Off With Soap & Water: Most of the times face paint products wash off with mild soap and water. For best results, remove with a high quality baby wipe or baby shampoo, water and a wash cloth. Avoid using low cost baby wipes, as these can be irritating to young children’s skin.
  • Moisturize Your Skin Post-Removal To Avoid Irritation: To reduce your chances of any skin irritation, breakout or redness, Alice and Pressler believe that it’s best to prepare you face and body before even applying the paint to begin with. Make sure that the makeup is put on to clean, dry skin and steer clear of painting over any wounds or rashes.

  • The second type of hand sanitizer is based on Quaternary ammonium compounds, such as benzaklonium chloride or benzethonium chloride. While the ethanol-based hand sanitizers are flammable, the Quaternary ammonium compounds are not. Quaternary ammonium compounds fungistatic, bacteriostatic against gram-positive bacteria, and bacteriostatic against some gram negative bacteria. Like ethanol, the Quaternary ammonium compounds are not active against non-enveloped viruses.

Some species of Staphylococcus aureus carry a gene that allows resistance to Quaternary ammonium compounds. These organisms are also more likely to be antibiotic resistant, as well. Quaternary ammonium compound hand sanitizers may not be the best choice due to methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a concern. Quaternary ammonium compounds adsorb to the cytoplasmic membrane of microbes causing leakage of cytoplasmic contents.

  • The third type of hand sanitizers contains triclosan. Triclosan is a commonly used antibacterial in a wide variety of products including deodorant soaps, toothpastes and mouth washes. Triclosan kills organisms by damaging the cell membrane, but has weak activity against gram-negative bacteria, such as Pseudomonas.  However, the The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says triclosan could also carry unnecessary risks. Triclosan contributes to making bacteria resistant to antibiotics. Overexposure to antibiotics or improper antibiotic use can lead to bacterial resistance, making it more difficult or even impossible to treat.

Although a smile should consume every moment of our short lives. Today is a reminder established by Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts.

Advertising, in 1959. He designed the smiley in 1963.

The State Mutual Life Assurance Company of Worcester, Massachusetts (now known as Hanover Insurance) had purchased Guarantee Mutual Company of Ohio. The merger resulted in low employee morale. In an attempt to solve this, Ball was employed in 1963 as a freelance artist, to come up with an image to increase morale. What he created was a smiley face, with one eye bigger than the other. In less than ten minutes, Harvey Ball came up with the simple yet world-changing smiley face. The simplicity of the image brought smiles to the faces of the executives, who paid him $45 for his creation.[2]

This image went on to become the most recognizable symbol of good will and good cheer on the planet.

Yes, the infamous smiley face that knows NO politics, NO geography and NO religion.

But unhappy with how the smiley face was being used across the world (i.e. over-commercialization of his creation), Harvey believed that we, all of us, should devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts throughout the world. Harvey’s idea was that for at least one day each year, neither should we. He declared that the first Friday in October each year would henceforth be World Smile Day®. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States has a chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer at some time during her life. You may be wondering “But what does breast cancer have to do with dermatology?”

As a matter of fact, there is a direct correlation between breast cancer and melanoma. For many years, there has been only speculation as to why the two cancers are linked.

According to a study by the Irish Journal of Medical Science, there is a strong association between breast cancer and melanoma.  Women with breast cancer have an increased risk of developing melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, and women with melanoma are at a higher risk for developing breast cancer.

“In general, patients with melanoma or other skin cancers are always at higher risk of developing other malignancies,” Dr. Murphy commented. “But this is about a fourfold increase, which raises the possibility of a genetic predisposition linking the two cancers.”

The four-fold increase gives a greater likelihood of the two cancers being linked by a genetic predisposition. Additionally, it is found that women under 50 with breast cancer are at a higher risk of melanoma as are breast cancer patients who have been treated with External Radiation Therapy

The Irish Journal of Medical Science study corroborates the findings of journals such as Annals of Oncology and Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, which reported that breast cancer patients have between 1.4 and 2.7 times the risk of developing melanoma. In addition, The International Journal of Cancer noted that female melanoma patients have a 1.4 times greater chance of developing breast cancer.

“All of these studies reinforce the importance of routine breast cancer exams for melanoma patients and annual skin exams for breast cancer survivors,” said Perry Robins, MD, President of The Skin Cancer Foundation. “It is particularly alarming for young women as melanoma rates are increasing rapidly among this demographic.” Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old. Women under the age of 39 have a higher probability of developing melanoma than any other cancer except breast cancer.

The Foundation recommends that high-risk patients undergo an annual full-body skin screening by a physician. And self-exams are just as important, coupled with the practice of rigorous sun protection methods. Performed regularly, self-examination can alert you to changes in the skin and aid in the early detection of skin cancer.

A sunburn is the skin’s response to extreme ultraviolet (UV) exposure and indicates severe damage. In as little as 10 minutes of intense UV exposure, the skin sets into motion a system of defense against this enemy.

We know how important sunscreen is, but sometimes, no matter how much you reapply, you may still end a hot summer day with a sunburn. A few days go by and the peeling process begins. The peeling of skin is a sign that your skin is recovering and trying to heal.

UV Damaged Skin

The sun produces ultraviolet radiation, more commonly referred to as UV radiation. In just 10 minutes of sun exposure, skin can start a self-protective process from the UV radiation. Redness is the first sign of too much sun exposure. Skin often becomes tight because of the loss of moisture. On some occasions, the top layer of skin becomes darker and thicker, in a protective response to the UV radiation exposure, creating a “tan” look. However, in most instances, the UV radiation is more intense and kills the exposed skin cells, and in turn creates a sunburn reaction. UV also leads to an increase in epidermal thickness, termed hyperkeratosis.

Skin Peeling & Recovery.

After sunburn the body naturally forms a new layer of skin to replace the old damaged skin. The new layer takes approximately 4 to 7 days to fully form. During the formation, the new layer of skin is fragile; therefore the sunburned skin acts as a shield until the under layer is fully developed.

The peeling occurs once the freshly formed skin cells are established enough to function as the outer layer of skin. Peeling is gradual. It is important not to rush the process and peel the skin yourself. If your skin peels too early it may prompt tenderness or bleeding.

Sunburn is often painful and clearly damaging to skin. Remember to put on sunscreen daily to protect your skin and avoid the peeling process.

Seek Dermatological Treatment.

Although most sunburns heal on their own with simple home care, severe burns from either the sun or a tanning bed may require medical attention. While lying out in the sun, you need to continuously reapply sunscreen, once is not enough. The sun is at its peak between 10 A.M. and 2 P.M., which is a good time to limit your exposure to the sun. If you lay out during this time, use protection. In addition to sunscreen, it is important to wear a hat to protect your scalp and sunglasses to protect your eyes.

Exposure to the sun is not all bad if you are safe and protect yourself. Monitoring the amount of sunscreen you have applied and how long you have been lying out are both essential. Enjoy the warm weather, but prevent sun poisoning this summer.
